Description
The UMBC Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Matt Belzer performs with Grammy award-winning percussionist Vince Cherico in a concert celebrating Latin jazz.
Vince Cherico is a featured drummer in many of today's jazz and world music venues. From 2014 to 2016, Cherico won 5 Grammy Awards, starting with the 2014 Latin Grammy for Final Night at Birdland, with The Chico O'Farrill Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra for Best Instrumental Recording; a 2015 Grammy for The Offense of The Drum with The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra for Best Latin Jazz Album; later in 2015 a 4th Grammy for the Latin Grammy's Best Latin Children's Album for Los Animales with Mister G.; and in 2016 a 5th Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album for his performance with The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra's recording of Cuba: The Conversation Continues.
Cherico teaches privately in his own New York City studio, and is also on the Faculty of The Drummers Collective, The Queens College Jazz Masters Program and is a music associate at The Columbia University Jazz Program. As a guest artist/instructor, Cherico has led ensembles for The Xalapa Seminario de Jazz, The Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival, The University of Alaska, Anchorage Jazz Festival, the University of Alaska, Fairbanks Jazz Festival, and The University of Maine Salsa Festival.
